Days to Departure: 120
February 21, 2016 marked four months until our departure for Seattle-Tacoma Airport (aka – Sea-Tac)!!
We are getting ever more excited with each passing day. At the same time there is some level of apprehension, a feeling that we are racing against a rapidly spinning clock as we figuratively, if not literally, roll towards June 21. For those of you familiar with Cheryl Strayed’s book, Wild, we are rookies to this whole touring by bike thing – like her, we are certain to overpack in some areas and underpack in others. No, we aren’t taking a special shovel to bury our bodily waste products (Hey! we’re all just little factories, right?). I also, don’t think we are going to tip over from all the excess stuff we are carrying, but just a quick view of the USB spaghetti (no sauce, but we need juice!) is a bit daunting.
We are making progress on getting the bare minimum items lined up for arrival so we can train fully loaded.
On Friday, Mike’s trike arrived and we rode together on them for the first time on Sunday. A good bit of Saturday and Sunday was spent getting his trike kitted out with bags and bars and a loud horn. On Tuesday, his large panniers (Arkel RT-60) arrive, so Lucia will no longer be forced to carry everything on her trike.
Just the day before, we were happy to act as Warmshowers.org hosts for Sylvia Halpern, a lady who has ridden her trike, “Myrtle the Turtle” all over – most recently across the USA, as well as internationally. Take a look at her blog, Travels by Trike. In addition to sharing our home (including a shower with endless hot water) and hearing some of her Travels by Trike experiences, Lucia was able to ride with Sylvia to the Withlacoochee Trail in Inverness, FL.
Along the 45-mile route, the ladies on trikes were able to join a tractor parade. This added something special since a few of the tractors looked a bit like motorized trikes, and as Lucia and Sylvia pedaled along with them, they had a police escort!
Keep on rolling!
